What is arthritis ?
Arthritis is the result of the cartilage degradation around the joints. Over time, the cartilage cracks and crumbles, leaving place for bony outgrowth. Mobility-related pain may also be increased by the synovial fluid effusion. Without cartilage or synovial fluid, the articulation bones rub one directly the other. This causes stiffness, blockages and a significant loss of mobility.
What is visco-supplementation ?
Visco-supplementation or intra-articular injection consists in injecting a hyaluronic acid based solution directly within the articulation affected by osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a component of the healthy synovial fluid, with visco-elastic properties essential for the proper functioning of the articulation. Visco-supplementation protects the articulation, relieving pain and may delay the need for prosthesis(1).
